I play a game these days: Take any music magazine, turn each page and count how many musicians are actually smiling, or at least not looking like they want to kill you (or themselves). Good luck. Hip-hop publications are particularly good for this as well.

Such wastes of precious life. Sad.

We happened across your wordery by the purest of chances & got sucked in (as "they" are wont to say).

As a couple'o 30somethings we understand entirely the notion that music, like Reality TV (back in the 80's wasn't it Quiz Shows? - well, it was in the UK anyways), is now seen by the 'youth' (ahem)merely as a foothold in the brief climb to noteriety, fame, money, fashion & scent lines, via a heady & not entirely unexpected pot pourri of humiliation + involuntary over-exposure + yard sale-priced Soul auctions for those clammered after 15 fucking minutes.

It's at a stage now where, as slowly decaying misery-guts, we can (without irony of any colour) safely say "tis a phase - they'll grow out of it", because they will. Give it 6months... etc etc. Of course, the next thing will be equally as soul destroyingly annoying to us grandparents & killjoys, but at least music will re-inflate & give us a bit of spunk (male & female, mind) again.

Great column and I agree with your sentiments 100%. Just wanted to add though that one of the reasons we won't be celebrating 40th (or even 10th) anniversaries of a lot of current music is the place that music plays in people's lives today.

I'm sure you can relate to the idea of anxiously waiting outside the record store on a Tuesday morning, just dying for the place to open so you could get the new release from REM, U2, or even Iron Maiden. Today, music is so ubiquitous, so in-your-face all the time, so easy to obtain, and so of-the-moment, that its place in the lives of young music fans is no more important than what avatar they are using for their blog that week, or which shade of black nail polish they've opted for.

Artists and bands were semi-mysterious. I didn't know what Chrissie Hynde's crotch looked like or whether or not Bono was fucking someone other than his wife. And, I'm glad I didn't! And while myspace is a great way to find new music or to be able to put yourself out there, it has made music so commonplace as to become, well..... common.

There have always been good bands and there have always been shitty bands. Its just that in the past, you didn't have to slog through the shitty ones quite as deep to find those good ones.
