Having announced the completion of their new album Day & Age (set for US release on November 25), the Killers have also named "Human" as the first single from said album.
It's an elegiac, synthy rocker that seems tailor-made for the dancefloor. Appears the band has worked out their Springsteen aspirations and have now moved onto latter-day Duran Duran.
As someone who was quite taken with Hot Fuss and still considers it one of the best albums of the last decade (granted, the pickin's be slim), I expected (and was not disappointed in that respect) by the slight stumble that was Sam's Town. I liken it to Weezer's Pinkerton in that it was a grittier record second record following a hugely successful debut effort that most bands would be hard-pressed to top.
While there are those who consider Pinkerton a masterpiece (and emo prototype), I consider it the result of a young band not quite sure where to go from where they were at the time. The Killers found themselves in much the same place after the unexpected runaway success of Hot Fuss. Sam's Town is twice the album Pinkerton was, though, so I have very high hopes that Day & Age will not disappoint.

Sam's Town better than Pinkerton? Wow. I loved Hot Fuss, but Sam's Town was awful. Pinkerton was gritty, catchy, and still plays just as well today. I initially liked Sam's Town, but the vocals and lyrics absolutely repulse me now. Not to mention they were trying to be like U2 and Springstein, while on Pinkerton Weezer sounded like Weezer - just less produced.
i agree. at first i liked sams town, now the lyrics make me cringe and the annoying loud vocals piss me off. i miss the low, cool mellow vocals of hot fuss.
i crave for this new album to be more hot fuss style. i miss that shiz
Guys, Sam's Town was freaking amazing! They went from being a girly "Mr Brightside" band to being kick ass!
Yeah i agree, Weezer are truly shit.. people seem to think Rivers is some kind of melodic genius, he aint hes just a simpleton. There a few worse lyricists than Cuomo aswell.
Overated tosh!
I'm sorry but I really don't like Hot Fuss (except for All the Things I've Done, Smile Like You Mean It, Andy You're a Star and On Top). And I believe that Sam's Town was MUCH better. And Weezer is alright even though I have only heard most of their hits.
Pinkerton is a masterpiece! As well as hot fuzz. Weezer has sucked since, and Sam's town sucked. I hope the killers can find their way back, not following the path weezer has taken. Forever lost!
Human is the most annoying god damn song I have ever heard. Human or Dancer? what the holy fuck does that mean? It's not even a god damn coherent thought. I have always been pretty ambivalent about the Killers and that entire genre, but every time that god damn song gets radio play I can do nothing but imagine these idiots swallowing some shotgun shells.
I have no reasonable reason to loath this stupid song so much. But somehow it strikes a cord that instantly pisses me off to no end. Am I the only one? I have been Googling quite a bit, and have yet to find anyone else that is so completely annoyed and pissed off by this stupid fucking song.
How old are you Nate? You make it sound like you are a teenager. There's nothing wrong with not liking the song, but if it makes you that mad when you hear it then maybe you should think about seeing a psychiatrist.
lmao @ nate although i am a killers fan and i love human nate's comment was the funniest thing i read all day.
p.s sams town wayyyyyyy better than hot fuss
now let the flaming commence!!!
im kieren by the way lol
voteap.....my youtube
I like the new single, and the synth/dance feel. That's gonna set them apart and will mean this song sounds less dated in 20 years.
The lyric "are we human or are we dancer" is a reference to a comment made by journalist Hunter S. Thompson who commited suicide in 2005 I think .. the rest of the lyrics can therefore be understood as a comment on his life & death.!
that still doesnt help us to understand by what is meant with 'OR ARE WE DANCER?'
dont worry nate, i get pretty pissed when i hear that part sung because it makes 0 sense to me either. when i hear it i picture stupid reindeer.
I feel the same way... Song is wayyy too annoying, and the worst thing is that it sticks in my head even after I change the station! :-/
I'm also peeved by the next line: "my signs are vital." I understand that they're trying to say that their vital signs are strong, but gimme a break... It sounds stupid to say that signs are vital because that doesn't mean anything. I lost respect for them because of these idiotic lyrics.
I'm so agreeing with Nate here.
And I'm not a teenager, me being 28, soon to be 29.
"Are we human, or are we dancer", it makes no sense at all, and it really pisses me off as well...
My own version of the tale the lyrics tell is this: as Brandon Flowers has said the inspiration came from Hunter S. Thompson's words, possibly the whole song is a dedication to him and the way he ended his own life (he shot himself in the head, suffering from several chronic illnesses). The "platform of surrender", cutting the cord (of life), "Wave goodbye, say farewell, you've gotta let me go".... reading the lyrics this way, the intention seems obvious to me.
Intertwined in the story told by the lyrics is that question we might benefit from asking ourselves: "are we human or are we dancer?" Personally I take it as asking whether we are taking notice of what's going on around us, or are we oblivious, wrapped up in our own fantasy world, allowing others to manipulate us, and the real world?
I think some of us are human and others are dancer. Because the world needs dancer. And dancer's need Xtc, Hunter was a drug-abuser... You see the link?! ;-)
Thompson's quote was part of an essay asking (rhetorically) if America was producing a generation of "dancers"... living in a fantasy, all moving to the same beat, all for show.
Personally, I love the line "are we human or are we dancer?", simply because it made me stop and wonder.
"My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" and other lyrical masterpieces just don't quite have the same effect =)
this song makes me want to kill the dj at our radio station i bet it gets played about 10 to 15 times a day and same with kid rocks new song and it makes me want to barf i would pobly not mind this song if it made sence or maybe i had only heard it once neer realizing how bad it really was
*dances in human form*
I'm going to have to agree with Nate. My local radio station is obsessed with playing this song, and I can't get away from it because we can't turn the radio over in the shop I work at. It annoys the hell out of me every time I hear it. Quote or no quote, it's just dumb...sorry.
simple, "Are we human," meaning are we some one who is able to thinkf or them selfs, ask questions defy the rules
"or are we dancer" some one who does everything step by step, no asking questions no going out of your way.
Yeah but why didn't they just add an s on the end and ask, are we human or are we dancers?
Alternatively he should say "Am I human, or am I a dancer" although that doesn't scan as well.
Call me synical but when artists use these mixed up lyrics when they could just as easily say something that makes sense, they do so to get us discussing what it means thereby giving the band and the song more publicity.
THANK YOU! also hate the lyric "are we human or are we dancer" if nothing else the GRAMMAR annoys me, there should be an "s" at the end of "dancer" because he's referring to "we." sorry to be pedantic but ARGH! what a childish lyric
They did amazingly well on the song. So what if some of it is cryptic? Its an art, and it makes you think a bit. Maybe they're talking about the freedom that dancing can give you? Are we just humans, or are we more than that? It can be taken many diffrent ways. If there is a meaning that the artist had in mind, or something completly other, its all in your perspective.
We are a generation of dancers.
The statements below demonstrate that very clearly. That is all I will say on the subject, arguing over the internet is pointless.
Also, for the poser who had difficulties with the grammar of the song: "We" in this instance is what is known as a fully collective singular pronoun. The "we" being referred to our generation (See the Hunter S. Thompson quote), which is singular when referred to as a whole, as it is in this instance. To say "Are we human or are we dancers?" would be akin to saying "Is it cat or is it dogs?" As you can see, the plurality doesn't agree. In this case what Mr. Flowers has chosen to do is say something akin to "is it cat or is it dog", which is perfectly acceptable. Articles such as "a" are not necessary when the following word is used to describe a separate subject. In our theoretical example of cats and dog, it is the "it" which is the separate subject. In the case of the song it is "We", which is of course a reference to our generation, which is singular. As you can see, the cases agree, and the grammar checks out. So, next time before you pass judgment on someone else for writing "childish lyrics" be sure to reflect on yourself, and your own knowledge of grammar.
I hope this clears up a little of the controversy surrounding the lyrics.
Did you ever feel so strongly about a song that you found it difficult to convey in words??? Neither did I until I heard Human and more specifically the line "are we human or are we dancer" which drives me nuts...anyway due to my hatred of this lyric and song I searched for comments on it to see what other people felt...it was only when I read Nate's post (above) that I found sweet release (and laughed a little)...I mean it...the post above puts my feelings on paper (or screen) perfectly and for this I want to thank Nate for a great post
I really hate the lyrics too, but i hate the music too - its shit!!!
BUT... not as bad as fucking cold play, how shite are they man!!!
Everyone's right. Or is it everybody's right..? Who cares. At first I thought the song was very annoying and I didn't get the main line 'Are we human or are we dancer?' But I loved the line 'Close your eyes, clear your heart' so I went online to check what it was about. I've read Hunter S Thomson, and he writes great stuff, it feels incoherent at times but he's getting at something in a different way. I get what he's asking now and it probably means something different to everyone. Not a blinding Killers track for me, but I don't hate it like I did at first. Nate's comments were funny - but, Nate, if you read 'Fear and Loathing' and still feel the same I'd be surprised.
Hey, im reading ur comments, and i dont know the song, and im from holland, but could it be he uses the word dancer as a pun for the word denser?
Hey, seriously folks...
Don't try to look for depth where there is none to be found.
The lyrics are really as bad as they sound. Nothing to look for here.
And for that matter, "He doesn't look a thing like Jesus" is a pretty nonsensical and friggin' stupid line that pisses me off as well.
Aghhh
Im so angry about this song
RAGEEEEEEEEEEE
Perhaps I just need some perspective on life
Or just a life in general
tw@
If you don't like the lyrics you must be dancer
Hunter T.
HAHA. Last anonymous poster, you make me smile. FYI, "He doesn't look a thing like Jesus" refers to the fact that "he" is some mythical savior who "save[s] you from your old ways." Basically, the only way this guy does not resemble Jesus is physically.
And yeah... I really like "Human," but I find myself silently wishing there was an "s" at the end of "dancer," there.
It''s because human is meant as singular imo. "are we a human or are we a dancer" would sound even weirder. Good song!
sry but ur all wierd people..
ur getting pissed cuz u dont get the lyrics O.o
[simple, "Are we human," meaning are we some one who is able to thinkf or them selfs, ask questions defy the rules
"or are we dancer" some one who does everything step by step, no asking questions no going out of your way]
Im agree =D
and.. is a Fucking song dammit
they dont need to use perfect grammar >.>
---†Lakal†---
I'm almost positive the lyric is actually "are we human? or are we denser?" as in "more dense"...
I think it means are we human (are we actually feeling and thinking for ourselves)or are we dancers(are we just performing or fake)
Obladi Oblada life goes on bra Lala how the life goes on
"are we human, or are we dancer"
S's boys in isn’t hard go back to school and stop polluting the radio with rubbish that make to sense.
song is great, at least for those who understand it...
with "Dancer" it is meant that we are puppets dancing on a cord, our movements are determined by the will of the puppet- master (not our own will). This cord shall "cut".
grammar is perfect, "dancer" is used in an adjective way. an "s" would be totally stupid
It appears that Brandon Flowers, vocalist and keyboard player of the band has stated in an interview that the line "are we human, or are we dancer?" is a reference to a remark once made by the late Hunter S. Thompson, an ascerbic journalist famed for "telling it like it is", often in offensive terms. He had commented that America is nowadays raising a "generation of dancers". Thompson committed suicide in 2005.
This is a great fucking thread. I am laughing my socks off here!
Good thing that there isn't an s at the end as I probably would't have this great time procrastinating if there was :-)
Bottom line.. the song is gay. its over the top 80 wannabe poppy cheeseness with homo lyrics and melody.
Dancer in the story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, is Rudolphs father and is concerned about appearances. He admonishes Rudolph for being different and encourages him to put a button on his red nose and stop jumping around. He insists that he conform and fit in. Humans are existential creatures by design full of free will and able to choose, yet we to often times give up those attributes and conform. Are we human or are we Dancer?
The fact that "Human" has generated this much conversation is, in my opinion, what a good song is all about. I can honestly say that I don't really The Killers much at all but I do like "Human" because it forces people to open dialogue and act 'human' as opposed to the opposite. If you want to hear lyrics that will make you think, listen to TOOL.
First, I have to love the way the Killers are unpredictable.
Sam's Town threw me for a loop but in the end I enjoyed it more than Hot Fuss. In comparison Hot Fuss was a collection of singles, Sam's Town was a cohesive album that fit together, IMO.
Having said that, when I first heard Human, on Aussie radio of all places, I was like, is that the Killers, is that some Aussie band imitating the Killers, no, they are telling me that is the Killers and I thought, wow, what are you trying to do to me boys, you are veering back to the roots already! Good on ya! Keep us on our toes.
Fletcher - if the We is a "fully collective singular pronoun" then why is it not "is we human or is we dancer"?
anyway i don't really like the Killers although I think the song is ok, i just wondered what it was about and now I think I have an idea so thanks to those that commented regarding Hunter S Thompson, very intersting.
I haven't laughed so much at any posts for ages. The whole album is great, human is obviously about
Hunter S. so if you want to understand more then look out for Gonzo, a movie/documentary about Thompson. And I have to say all the albums are special in their own ways. Oh and does anyone elso think human sounds like icehouse?
I'm 47 and I asked my teenagers "are they saying dancer? what does that mean?". And they said -- "I don't know. What does it matter? It's a good song."
Looks like they were right. I have to learn to let go of things that don't make sense to me.
I would have preferred are we humans or or we dancers . . .
Since this whole post line seems to discuss the lyrics "are we human or are we dancers" i believe this completely takes from the rest of the album and song to focus on one aspect of the lyrics. But just to put in my 2 cents. I at first though the lyrics were crazy and kind of put me off to the killers and the song since i did not understand it. Then i was informed it was a quote from Hunter Thompson by a friend and the lightbulb clicked. Now, i love the song. Just goes to show that understanding a song or at least what its talking about can have as much to do with its success as the beat and rythmic qualities.
Plus, if you dislike the lyrics and song so much quit obsessing about it and go find something you like.
I hear you Nate...this is possibly one of the worst songs I have heard in many years. If I want to understand more about H S Thompson I'll read H S Thompson. If the Killers want to comment on Thompson might I suggest that immitation is the highest form of flattery... I'll even buy the shells.
"If the Killers want to comment on Thompson might I suggest that immitation is the highest form of flattery... I'll even buy the shells."
I don't understand why people write stuff like this, is it because you think you're clever? Because you actually sound like an overreacting 6 year old.
As for the lyrics, I'd prefer an s on the end of dancer as well, but I don't freak out about it because it obviously has some meaning, because if it didn't, he'd just say dancers. Just cause we don't understand the meaning doesn't give us license to fly into rabid rage. That's like if everytime you encountered an abstract painting you'd go on a killing rampage. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt any of you have done that.
David.. Springstein? Or a you just trying to be sarcastic? Probably so. No one could make that kind of error.

Clearly you are not as intelligent as the person who wrote the song because there is nothing wrong with the grammar. You are looking at the lyric from the point of view of an individual, and not a collective. We don't say 'are we humans?' because humans are a specie, so we refer to it collectively as 'human.' Now, take the original quote which assesses the American people as to whether they are 'human' as a specie, or 'dancer' as a specie. To make it a little easier to understand, try replacing the word dancer with alien, and then see if it scans.
What a dreadful song, I thought it was some kind of 80's prog rock crap when I heard it and then found out it was the Killers. WTF? At best I thought it may have been Leo Sayer trying out for Eurovision.
Ru-habish.
Nate's anger management issue is the frightening brand of ignorance/intolerance that leads to things like hate crimes. I think the comments posted thus far are a testament to the validity of the lyrics. IMHO.
I'm so glad there are others like me out there who are thinking 'WTF?' and becoming enraged every time they hear this song. But does anyone else realize how terrible the vocals are in this song? This guy can't sing! And the melody is flat and depressing.
As a side note... I'm not familiar with Thompson's work and I'm sure he's brilliant as some of you say, but I have to insert another rant in here: I've HAD IT with last name first names. And why is it that so many writers seem to have them? Truman Capote. Harper Lee (and she's female!). What is that? I know it's trendy right now to give your kid a last name first name, but it's just as annoying to me as naming your kid after a state or a brand.
There is something to be said about lyrics that can provoke so much conversation. Lyrics that don't make immediate sense force the listener to create their own interpretation. What a concept. It is a fundamental of poetry. When I heard the song I went through several stages. Stage 1: "what the hell did he say? Was it dancer or dancers? Or maybe he's saying a French word- danceure." but I hadn't read the lyrics at that point. Stage 2: "okay so it's dancer. what the hell does that mean? why is brandon getting all artsy fartsy on us?" Stage 3: maybe he means are we human as in flesh and blood or are we dancer- is there more to it- are we art/spirit/special, etc. Stage 4: Read somebody's post about it being from something Hunter S. Thompson wrote. Don't know anything about that. I'll look into it.
Are we human, or are we dancer.
...
All your base are belong to us.
WOW - take a chill. Such angst over a song?
What else pushes your buttons, Nate? Were you in a tirade when you saw Twilight on opening night and Edward wasn't as cute as you hoped?
It's called 'poetic license'. Write what you want (as long as it's intentional) and the audience has the choice to like it or not. But to get so worked up, well, dude you got issues.
Haha this is amusing. I completely understand why people are getting pissed off by the lack of an s on the end of dancer. It is so cringeworthy!
The grammar is not correct and the explanations given that try to justify it do not do so (unless you guys are American and have invented some new rules?). It would be fine to leave off the s if dancer could be an adjective as well as a noun (like human). Also 'is it cat or is it dog' does not make sense! You do need an article! 'Is it feline or is it canine' would be fine. 'Are we a dancer' could also be ok but adding an s would definately sound better.
Of course he wrote the lyric to make some sort of statement and provoke a reaction - he's certainly done that!
Also, he admits it isn't grammatically correct himself!

Great quote - stupid song.
song is great, at least for those who understand it...
with "Dancer" it is meant that we are puppets dancing on a cord, our movements are determined by the will of the puppet- master (not our own will). This cord shall "cut".
grammar is perfect, "dancer" is used in an adjective way. an "s" would be totally stupid
---- ok check out this post, in the last two sentances this guy guy writes that the grammer is perfect and that dancer is used as an adjective. hahahhahaha that is so idiotic. if this is an adjective then the writers of this lyric are either ignorant to the enlish language or bieng "dancer" is slang. all that i can picture if that is the case is some teenage brat going around saying "oh my gosh! did you see sarah? that bitch is so dancer?" hahaha... hey... dancer is not a fucking adjective, and if by some weird reason a dictionary tells you different, then go ahead and use it as such, but dont be surprised if when you do describe SOMETHING as "dancer" that all the people around you look at you like you are a dumbass. Last point. the guy that posted this made a stupid claim about dancer being an adjective , saying that the grammer is perfect. that would imply that the author of the post is has a better grasp on grammer then the rest of us who apparently had no clue that dancer could be used as an adjective yet, his implications are self-refuting in that he actually writes "..."dancer" is used in an adjective way..." hahahah that my friend is BAD gramatically. why not just write "dancer IS USED AS an adjective", what was written sounds horrible and is improper. im surprised the person who posted this even remembered that if you want to use the article "a" and it precedes a word that starts with a vowel, that you need to change it to "an". the only way to sound dummer then this guy would be to say that "dancer is used in an adjective ways" putting an "s" on way would be totally stupid. hahahaha
why must people from holland always state that they are from holland whenever they write comments?
Firstly, it isn't a Killers song that has stimulated this much opinion, it's a comment by Hunter S. Thompson that the Killers have used.
Secondly, there is a certain hypocrisy in their use of the quote from Mr Thompson. In my opinion it was a comment about people allowing themselves to be controlled by popular culture and not thinking for themselves/being human. In this respect the fact they have put his sentiment into a pop song lyric is hilarious. The Killers is pop music by the way!
If they are really fans of Hunter S. Thompson a better tribute would have been to stay at home, getting high and letting someone truly counter-culture, like the Sex Pistols, make music.
Okay.... It's linguistic innovation.
Think of it this way, he's innovating a new way to use the word dancer - a play on words based on the fact that human can be a noun or an adjective. He's taken it and purposely used dancer in the same way.
I.E., are we "human beings" or "dancer beings"
That phrase would elicit less complaints.
The way he is using it IS as an adjective, or else it would be plural as the predicate nominative agreeing with the pronoun "we."
Stop getting pissed off at little things. There's a pretty good video on youtube explaining the puppet imagery in this song.
I'm with Nate on this one. That is the single most annoying line in music EVER. It just irritates the living crap out of me. Well done to the Killers. They raised the bar once again, so to speak.
I'd like a karaoke version... then I could put in the s's as I go along :)
and why must people named Katja always generalize and be bitchy.
Anyway...I absolutely love this song. Regardless of age, I think not liking a song on the sole basis of an -according to you- missing 's' is utterly childish, especially if you do know the reason behind it. Just try to appreciate the poetic side of it.
Well, as you might or might not know, it is more or less a rule among songwriters that hit songs always should contain one thing that bugs the hell out of people. That´s how you remember the song! Just like "Umbrella" with the stupid "ella-ella-ella ey-ey-ey" or ... well, can't seem to come up with any more examples. But I´m sure you can if you think about it?
Dancer is singular because it refers to a state of being, such as being human or "being dancer", as if dancer was an alternate to human.
Knowing the origin of this one line in the lyrics makes the entire song meaningful. For me, I was curious what the symbolism referred to and Googled it... and I'm glad I did. I wouldn't be surprised if the intentional ambiguity was so we would go and learn about it.

======
Okay, this is a pretty dumb comment. "It's pop music so it can't be meaningful."
Take a look at what this song has done. People are wondering what the lyrics mean and are now acting on these thoughts by trying to find the answer, thus being human rather than being "dancer" - thinking for themselves rather than just going along with the rest of the crowd.
To me, the song has accomplished what it was meant to.
And by the way, when has art ever made perfect sense. There are so many songs with lyrics that refer to obscure things that most people do not know of. Think U2, The Eagles, Peter Gabriel, or Bruce Cockburn.
Ok, has anyone here ACTUALLY danced infront of an audience? I've recently joined a drama class for the semester and we have had to do dancing onstage. "wave good bye, wish me well, you've got to let me go" I think it refers to going onstage, he is saying goodbye to his emotions and is just gonna... let himself go with the music. "up to the platform of surrender" I assume that is the stage. "my sign is vital" My guess is his heart is racing, he is nervous and excited. and as for the biggest question, "are we human, or are we dancer?" I believe it PROBABLY is hunter's words, but also, when u start to dance, you start to think differently from everyone else.
P.S i'm a guy, not a girl, and yes I dance
for all who think this is stupid. Stop and think about it. Don't be stupid and ignorant.
It depends on who you are, as to how you interpret the lyrics of Human. I have read alot of different opinions on this site and I feel that it just depends on if you like to think about things, you know, the big questions. Maybe he is referring to it as in are we human (the species) or can we more accurately describe it as dancer (a different "species" to call ourselves). Maybe its just me, but I love The Killers mello music. I think I am going to do a little research on Hunter Thompson.
im sorry for my english cause im not an english native speaker ... human or dancer means (in my opinion) are we peoples, who can decide about their lifes, or just dancer (or a doll) dancing (doing) what somebody (may be god) wants us to dance (do)
lol I had to pause and think 'uhm' too.. (First heard the song on Slicethepie and am now clueless if the band put it there or someone was breaking the copyright!!)
Anyway, I thought 'Are we human or are we Dancer?' maybe could be related to mythology of India - that the world was/is originated by a God dancing?
So, are we human, do we really exist, or are we just dreams of a god dreaming/dancing?
Nate made me go LoL, greatest comment ever!
stop googling here's one that shares your thoughts, this song simply dont have any logical grammar,Im not English speaking but I know that much about English.
BTW Im 17 years old becoming 18 in July (only so that you know that I am a teenager :P)
Im able to listen to the most music genres but to listen to someone that thinks that he's the only one in the world that knows music...Its like I want to go kill myself!
anyway this song really ticks me off!
perhaps It would be better if I didn't learnt myself English cuz im listening at Jpop and not knowing what they sing, and thinks Its great!
Iam sincerely waiting on someone that defends This "killers" band
(btw again: Killers is the most unfitting name for this crap-ass band, sorry I couldent help myself but Im free to express myself!
perhaps cuz they r killing good music?)
